Bithoor is a town located in the Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is situated on the right bank of the River Ganges and is a center of Hindu pilgrimage. The town is divided into 10 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. As of the 2001 India census, Bithoor had a population of 9,647. Bithoor is also known for its association with the Indian independence movement, especially the Indian Rebellion of 1857. It was at one time home to many of the rebellion’s most prominent participants including the Rani of Jhansi, Lakshmi Bai. In the era of the British Raj, Bithoor was a constituent of the Cawnpore district (now Kanpur) within the United Provinces. Baji Rao II, the final Peshwa, was exiled to Bithoor, where his adopted son Nana Sahib established the town as his headquarters.
